iPhone 5S vs iPhone 5 vs iPhone 5C: Side By Side Hardware Comparison [VIDEO]

Here's a complete side by side video comparison of iPhone 5S vs iPhone 5C vs iPhone 5. This video that we have put together compares all the said phones, you can find it embedded at the end of this post.

Apple released their seventh and eighth iteration into their iPhone category with the addition of the iPhone 5S and the iPhone 5C. Whilst the 5S – as is typically the case with 's' upgrades – stays physically very similar to the iPhone 5, the new iPhone 5C is very different. Instead of an aluminum rear housing, we see a solid unibody polycarbonate construction, resulting in a slightly deeper handset.

When I opened the box of my iPhone 5C, I was expecting to be presented with what could only be described as a 'cheap alternative' to the iPhone 5S. I was expecting a shoddy product that Apple were trying to shift for a price not far off from the premium. I don't particularly know why I was expecting this, it seems I shouldn't do so in the future, as Apple have so far only impressed me with the iPhone 5C.

The plastic unibody construction of the rear shell results in a phone which fits snugly in the hand, and the tapered edges only add to this experience. Whilst the iPhone 5S certainly feels more premium than the iPhone 5C, it's hard not to when the entire phone is constructed with aluminum and glass, Apple have done an incredible job by making the 5C not feel second best. This may well have something to do with the fact that the 5S could now be classified as an outdated design, as we've been accustomed to it for a little over a year now in the iPhone 5 itself. We've put together a hardware comparison to compare the iPhone 5S, 5C and, which can be found below.

It's certainly too early for me to pass full judgment on any of these devices. A few hours of playing around is only enough to give you a consolidated first impression. With this being said, I'll be surprised if my base opinion changes much. If it does, I'd be more inclined to say that the 5C is likely to be my favorite out of the two new additions to Apple's lineup, the camera and speed optimizations may well be the iPhone 5S's saving grace, however. It's certainly interesting to see Apple continue with the tradition of including an ‘s' model after a redesign, and whether this will ever change or develop into something more.

Samsung announces Galaxy S4 Mini

Dual-core 1.7GHz CPU, 4.3-inch qHD SuperAMOLED screen, UK launch in July

Samsung has announced the much-anticipated and heavily-leaked Galaxy S4 Mini. As the name suggests, it's a miniature version of the Galaxy S4, and like the Galaxy S3 Mini, it's packing suitably downsized specs inside its diminutive chassis.

The Galaxy S4 Mini rocks a 4.3-inch qHD (960x540) SuperAMOLED display, and is powered by a 1.7GHz dual-core processor with 1.5GB of RAM. Around the back there's an 8-megapixel camera, on the front is a 1.9MP front-facer. There's also 8GB of internal storage, expandable via microSD card. Powering everything is an 1,900mAh battery.

The Galaxy S4 Mini boasts many of the headline software features of its larger sibling. It's running Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean with the latest TouchWiz UI, and in today's press release Samsung highlights features like Sound and Shot, S Translator and S Health, as well as WatchON TV capabilities through a built-in IR blaster.

Connectivity-wise, you're looking at Wifi a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 and 3G/4G radios. Samsung says there'll be 3G, 4G LTE and dual-SIM variants, though the availability of these SKUs will vary depending on country.

The Galaxy S4 Mini will be shown off to attendees at Samsung's "Premiere 2013" event at London's Earls Court exhibition center on June 20. No release date has been revealed just yet, but the manufacturer did confirm that it'll be available in black and white color options.

Galaxy S III software leak reveals potential S4-class upgrades

Samsung appears to be making good on its promise to port Galaxy S4 features to the Galaxy S III. A test Android 4.2.2 update, discovered by SamMobile, includes the lockscreen effects and widgets, enhanced screen modes, updated settings, and new S Voice control features found in Samsung's new flagship. Samsung previously said it would include updates that were "not dependent on hardware," ruling out gestures like Air View and the smart TV remote app.

The Android update is currently undergoing internal testing and is available as an unofficial pre-release ROM, suggesting that the company could add or remove features before an official rollout — which is reportedly slated for June. Given the unofficial nature of the ROM, we don't recommend that you install it at this time.

Apple are expected to unveil the next major version of their mobile OS, iOS 7 at their world wide developer conference in June, and now according to a recent report, Apple’s iOS 7 is set to get a new design over iOS 6.

The new design for iOS 7 is said to change the look and feel of the mobile OS, and the interface will apparently change to a more flatter look with a simpler look, the project is apparently been overseen by Apple’s Jony Ive.
 

 
It will be interesting to see what this new design for iOS 7 looks like, the design for Apple’s mobile OS has remained unchanged in terms of the overall look since it was first introduced back in 2007, it has seen minor updates since then.

Samsung Unveils 7-Inch Galaxy Tab 3, with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean

Samsung has officially unveiled the new 7-inch tablet Samsung Galaxy Tab 3. It will be available from the month of May with the WiFi model, followed in June, with the release form also includes 3G connectivity. The device has been designed for maximum portability, given the small size and a frame that allows easy handling with one hand only and convenient storage in your pocket or purse. There are no known official information yet on price.

The idea, however, is that a product will be very much in economic as the differences with the predecessor are minimal: the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 is in fact the same 7-inch display with a resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels and a density of 169 ppi, fueled by a dual-core processor 1.2 GHz and 1 GB of RAM. The internal memory is now available in two versions: an 8GB, the other 16 GB, in both cases cards expandable via microSD up to 64 GB of additional. Technical features that include connectivity WiFi, Bluetooth 3.0, USB 2.0, A-GPS + GLONASS and operating system Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. The battery is 4000 mAh while the dimensions are equal to 111.1 x 188.0 x 9.9 mm, all for a total weight of 302 (WiFi) or 306 grams (3G).

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 finally also includes a dual cameras: a rear 3-megapixel camera and a 1.3 megapixel front. From the point of view of software and services is provided throughout the portfolio weblog with Samsung Kies, Kies Air, Hub and ChatOn products and various applications such as Google Search, Gmail, Play Store, Plus, YouTube, Talk, Maps and Now.

 

Google Updates Platform Distribution Numbers Gingerbread Down To 38.5%, Jelly Bean Up To 28.4%

As usual Google has updated monthly platform distribution numbers for Android in its developer dashboard. The numbers, based on devices accessing the Play Store over the last 14 days (ending May 1st), tell developers which versions of Android are most prevalent, and which are on the decline.

This month, as last month, we're seeing a decline in Gingerbread and a rise in Jelly Bean. Gingerbread has dropped from 39.8% to 38.5%, a 1.3% drop for those keeping tally at home. Jelly Bean, meanwhile, has seen a slightly more substantial shift, rising 3.4% from 25% to 28.4%.

  

Elsewhere, the ebb and flow of version numbers is more or less expected. clair and Donut are grasping for dear life, sitting still at 1.7% and 0.1% respectively, Froyo has dropped a mere 0.3%, and Honeycomb has dropped another 0.1%. Samsung announces Galaxy Mega 5.8 smartphone

Adding yet another smartphone to its list of launches in the past few days, Samsung has announced the Galaxy Mega 5.8.

Here is a look at what the latest offering from Samsung boasts of:

1. 5.8-inch screen

The smartphone boasts of a 5.8-inch QHD TFT screen and weighs 182 grams.

2. 8MP camera

While it has an 8 mega-pixel rear-facing camera, the smartphone is also equipped with a 1.9 megapixel front-facing camera.



3. 1.4 GHz dual core processor

It is powered by a 1.4 GHz dual core processor and will run on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean operating software.

4. Connectivity options

The connectivity options include Wi-Fi, BlueTooth 4.0, USB 2.0. It has a 2,600 mAh battery.

5. Availability

The Galaxy Mega will be available globally beginning May from Europe and Russia. The product availability varies by market and will be rolled out gradually.



6. 8 GB internal memory

The smartphone has an 8 GB internal memory with up to 64 GB expandable storage.
